Anime Previews - Apr. 2006 Part II

Spring '06 New Series Review
By DJCream
Heh, watching all of this anime is tiresome work. I feel like quitting watching
anime. Wait, is that...no! A pirate doctor! Nevermind, let's finish off the
season of new and exciting anime!

Black Lagoon
Episodes seen: 1
Who should see it: Anyone who likes anime with a lot of bullets
Okajima Rokuro is a Japanese businessman whose work life has been nothing but
Hell. Now that a couple of modern-day pirates by the name of Levi, Dutch and
Benny-Boy, has kidnapped him during a secret transaction, Rokuro has entered
a deeper level of Hell filled with more bullets than an Italian Armory.
Finally, an anime where guns do most of the talking! Take everything you like
about Cowboy Bebop, switch everyone’s gender and take out the space mortif
of Bebop and you get Black Lagoon. As much as I like to rave on an on how badass
this anime is, it’s just been recently licensed by Geneon so tough luck
trying to find subbers until the actual US DVD comes out.

Makai Senki Disgaea
Episodes seen: 1
Who should watch it: Anyone who loved the game
Flonne is an angle-in-training who was sent into the demon world to assassinate
the demon lord. Upon reaching her destination, she mistakes a coffin containing
the demon prince, Laharl, instead of the demon king. After a lot of bickering
and many interruptions, Flonne loses her coveted pendent and her patience and
attempts to put the heartless Laharl in a sleep that he won’t wake up
next time.
I’ll admit off the bat that I am not a fan of RPG’s, thus I know
nothing about the Disgeae game to base my opinions on. I can say that it’s
really fun to see that the cute character designs are back and it really helps
make the show a lot more humorous than what I imagined. Other than that, I
can see myself enjoying this series.

Soul Link
Episodes seen: 1
Who should watch it: Anyone hyped for another anime based on an h-game
Based on an h-game (from what I’ve been hearing), it tells the story
of Aizawa Ryota and his military training in the space resort of Aries. He
and his comrades have no idea that a sinister terrorist attack is going to
happen aboard the resort, so what will they do?
I went into this series expecting a lot of action and fan service, what a let
down. Nothing except for the intro really got me interested so this is one
of those series I’m just going to skip out on. I’m sure things
might get interesting but nothing really hooked me.

Joshi Kosei GIRLS-HIGH
Episodes seen: 1
Who should watch it: Anyone who likes their share of fan service
Eriko Takahashi, Yuma Suzuki, and Ayano Sato are all middle school friend who
has gotten a good enough grade to make it into a private high school. Before
the actual school term begins, they took a tour of the campus a day early in
their new school uniform. Unfortunately for them, they came to realize that
high school isn’t what they have dreamed of. On top of that, they tricked
fellow incoming freshmen that they’re upperclassmen. Can Eriko and friends
overcome a high life as outsiders of the school?
This series puzzles me a bit. I’m pretty sure that the target audience
intended for this anime is for girls with female-related issues and problems
all over the place. Yet, it would be clear that men would also enjoy this series
for the abundance of fan service (e.i. panty shots) so great that Master Roshi
(Dragon Ball) would have a nosebleed an ocean full. As much as I like to see
a good upskirt shot, I’m afraid I might have to pass when a discussion
about tampons rolls around…who am I kidding? This anime is loaded with
fan service!

.hack//ROOTS
Episodes seen: 2
Who should see it: Anyone interested in the next .hack story arc
In 2015, CC Corp’s database caught on fire causing the end of one of
the world’s biggest MMORPG, “The World”. A year later, a
new version of the game called “The World R:2” is launched pleasing
veterans and giving beginners like Haseo a second chance.
That fire has burned down everything that everyone loved about the original
.hack series that revolved around the first release of “The World”.
This new .hack doesn’t have the cute character designs, the deep relationships
between the characters or any likable music (except for Mozart’s “Magic
Flute” towards the end of the first episode). Instead, the atmosphere
of the world is in chaos with Player Killers roaming everywhere. The only reason
why I would keep torturing myself into watching this is the fact that the story
would supply something to expect in the next .hack game, “.hack//G.U.” for
the PS2.

Digimon Savers
Episodes seen: 1
Who should watch it: Anyone who loved Digimon about 5 years ago
Masaru is a high school student who claims to be the greatest street fighter.
Then comes Agumon, a rouge digimon. The two battles it out and acknowledges
each other’s strength. These two friends team up with a secret organization
to stop future rouge digimon from destroying the town.
I grew up watching Digimon so this one was another series I built massive hype
for myself. The first episode was decent although the music did get on my nerves.
I really hope that the story picks up like the first seasons of Digimon Adventures
or else it wouldn’t be worth watching.

Utawarerumon
The One Being Sung
Episodes seen: 1
Who should see it: Anyone who loves Inuyasha, but not because of the characters
An unknown masked man is found severely injured and gets taken care by a young
fox lady by the name of Eruru. The masked man, for some unknown reason, cannot
take off his mask and forgot everything in the past, including his name. I’m
guessing Eruru is going to help him recover his memories.
Out of the rest of the anime I’ve seen thus far, the setting in Utawarerumon
is a lot different from the rest. With animal/people and a Celtic-like setting,
it resembles a bit of Inuyasha only without those characters I personally don’t
love. Other than that, nothing really makes this series stand out. I do hope
that the violence as depicted in the intro foreshadows the events in the future
because this is another anime series I’d skip.

Ray
Episodes seen: 1
Who should watch it: Anyone who wants some action but can’t find any
Black Lagoon
Ray is a nurse with the abilities of surgeon. Surprising, considering that
in her past life her eyes were removed and sold over the black market. With
her new pair of eyes, she tries to give back lives to innocent people and refuse
to treat gangsters.
After watching Black Lagoon, I have to say that this comes next in terms of
pure action. With a mix of dramatic surgery procedures and occasional Chinese
Kung-Fu whoopings administered by other nurses, it does provide more than it’s
share of action. To give more incentive to watch the show, one of the doctors
has a long beard, eye patch, and a peg leg!
Some other shows I don't wanna hype..
Strawberry Panic: From what I’ve been seeing, it resembles Gakuen Heaven
but without a single trace of men. This meant a lot of yuri action that I saved
a spot for the series for a bigger analysis; however, no one has yet to sub
this series. What a bummer
(Edit by aquastar831: I was recently informed by a good friend
of mine in another fansub group that they will be working on this series. So
keep watching for their releases. )
Saru! Get you!: Perhaps you are more familiar with it’s more internationally
known title as Ape Escape. Yup, Specter has gone bananas again a released a
whole new slew of monkeys in pants to scurry around everywhere in the world.
If the show wasn’t nine minutes an episode, I’d so pay more attention
to this series.
Aa! Megami-Sama! S2: Perhaps you are more familiar with it’s more internationally
known title as Ah My Goddess! Well Belldandy and her sisters are back for another
season and all that good jazz that you remember from the manga that was left
out is sure to pop up. Yeah, I’m not at all excited.
Well that’s all for this season of anime. To see you out, I present to
you Ms. Tokito Ami, performer of the new opening song for the new season of
School Rumble and my newest pop idol. Apparently, she wants you to post a comment,
so make her happy and do so.
